Week 21: Cherry Tree, Imaginary Conversations, and the Bloodshed.

Av Mari Lorenzten

There is a lot happening in the first week after May 17th.

Standard (Oslo) - "Myth of the Cherry Tree" Organised by Mary Grace Wright

21.04.-27.05.2023

Biographies and ghost-written autobiographies are full of inflated epics and quips, posturing to be seen and remembered as the best versions of oneself, the famous myth of George Washington’s chopping of the cherry tree for example. Similar attention to portrayal exists in everyday life through how we chose to present ourselves and the characterizations others apply to us. We hold in ourselves assorted identities, often reduced by labels. The works in this exhibition share an acknowledgment and deep understanding that humans are full of multitudes.

National Museum - "Imaginary Conversations" by Louise Bourgeois

The exhibition stages encounter between Bourgeois and other artists. Some of these encounters took place during Bourgeois’s almost century-long life, while others occur across time and space.

National Museum - "All the Beauty and the Bloodshed" by Laura Poitras

17:30 - 20:00, 23rd May.

The documentary “All the Beaty and the Bloodshed”, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2022 and was nominated for an Oscar in the documentary category in 2023, follows one of the world’s best-known photo artists, Nan Goldin, as she fights to bring pharmaceutical companies to justice for the part they play in the ongoing opioid crisis in the United States. The director Laura Poitras blends still images, archival material, and intimate portrait interviews in the documentary to present the life and work of an artist who has consistently opposed social norms, stigmas, and the powers that be.
